About Personalized Music Lessons
Private music lessons tailored to each individual's goals: bass, guitar, piano, and acoustic bass, with theory and musicianship programs for all instruments (including singers and songwriters). Having guided more than 1,000 students through their studies, Marty puts the pieces of the musical puzzle together so the route to your musical goals is smooth and fun.
He teaches locally at of his home studio in Glendale, CA, as well as globally via Skype. His students have spanned the United States as well as Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Germany. (Really!)
Every person is unique and needs a unique approach. The elements of music are the same for every style of music. Applying them to individual goals, however, can vary dramatically. This is why communication is the primary ingredient to every lesson: goals are set, acknowledged when achieved, and new ones made to work towards. This alignment keeps each student happily on track and progressing.
Marty specializes in teens and adults through beginning and intermediate levels, though his advanced students have gone on to perform or record with such notables as Beck, Chaka Khan, Nine Inch Nails, Doug E. Fresh and Tori Amos, as well as creating many stable -- if less notable -- careers in music. As a veteran professional musician and private music instructor, he creates easy to understand and effective lessons that are organized, fun, and productive, resulting in stable musical skill and ability in almost any style of music you can imagine -- really!
What differentiates us
In a nutshell —I keep things simple by giving each student only what they need and want, no more and no less. I align every lesson to the student’s goals which gives purpose and reality to each step on their assignments. I make sure that each student knows what to practice, how to practice whatever it is, and why they are doing it. This way each student knows when they accomplish something, which makes them happy!
How we were trained
My training includes formal university studies in music performance and composition, five world-class private instructors, being a professional musician for more than thirty years and a lot of on-the-job training with producers, arrangers and various people in the music biz.
Why we love what we do
I started teaching in 1980. After working professionally for many years, people started asking me if I taught music as well as playing and composing. I have always enjoyed interacting with people, so I said "yes," and started teaching.
I discovered that helping other people achieve their musical goals was very rewarding, and I have been teaching ever since. Teaching is both a skill and an art, in that it deals not only with the mechanics of music and instruments, but with the communication skills necessary to create a teacher-student relationship that is enjoyable and productive for both the teacher and the student.
Over the years I have fine-tuned my personal methodology and continue to turn people on to playing and writing music whether for personal pleasure or professional ambition.
So why do I love doing what I do? Because! Making other people happy makes me happy.
