Temporary vs permanent hair removal

The first thing you need to know when looking into hair removal is that there’s no such thing as the “best” hair removal treatment. There are a number of ways to get rid of unwanted hair on your face and body, and each has its own pros and cons. All hair removal methods can be divided into two groups: permanent and temporary hair removal methods. When deciding whether to go for a permanent or temporary solution, here’s what you need to know.

Permanent Hair Removal

Permanent hair removal methods include laser hair removal (and IPL hair removal, which is very similar) or electrolysis. Laser hair removal and IPL treatments do not result in complete hair loss in any area, but are meant to reduce hair growth and lighten the color of any hair treated. Laser and IPL hair removal treatments are not effective all the time – about one in ten people do not get the full benefits of the treatment and have normal hair growth even after the sessions are completed.

Electrolysis, on the other hand, is almost always 100% effective and permanent. Both methods require a trained professional to perform the treatment to avoid skin damage or discoloration.

Both of these permanent hair removal methods can get pretty costly, as they require multiple sessions to be effective. These sessions take place regularly for up to a year, so you have to decide if you are committed to spending both the time and money for permanent hair removal. Of course, on the bright side, you won’t have to worry about regular waxing or shaving after the treatments are over.

Temporary Hair Removal

There are quite a few temporary hair removal methods, the most popular of which include waxing, shaving, depilatory crèmes, and sugaring. Over time, these methods may reduce hair and thin-out hair growth, but they are never permanent like electrolysis. These methods do a great job of leaving your skin smooth and hair free, but they have to be repeated on a very regular basis. They are less expensive than permanent hair removal methods, and most of these methods (such as shaving, using crèmes, and to a lesser degree, waxing), can be done at home without the need for a professional. On the other hand, some temporary hair removal methods can be quite painful, and may result in skin irritation or ingrown hairs.
