Hot Stone Massage

What is a hot stone massage?

A hot stone massage is a style where a therapist uses heated stones throughout the massage session. These flat, smooth stones are used for relaxation, and also for warming up tight muscles while the therapist’s hands are working on another part of the body.

Hot stone massage is a healing treatment that has been used for many centuries. In ancient times, a hot stone massage was used as a spiritual healing ritual to cure many illnesses. Today, it’s commonly known for stress relief and is administered at many popular spas across the country.

What should I expect during a hot stone massage?

You will undress and lie on a massage table, face down. The therapist will begin to warm up your body using a Swedish massage technique. Then, the therapist will supplement the Swedish massage with hot stones, which are heated in 120-150 F water before the massage begins.

The heated stones are placed along the spine, and various parts of the back. Once a stone cools, the therapist may replace it with another warmed one. It is believed the stones promote an energetic charge within the body.

Will I get burned?

These stones should not be painful or hot enough to burn you. But, as always, any discomfort should be immediately communicated to the therapist.

What are the benefits of a hot stone massage?

A hot stone massage can help with pain relief from chronic conditions, reduce stress, and rid the body of toxins. Many people also seek out hot stone massage as an ultra-relaxing variation to a regular Swedish or deep tissue massage.

Who should NOT get a hot stone massage?

Don’t partake in a hot stone massage if you suffer from diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure or are pregnant.
