Myofascial Release Massage

What is a myofascial release massage?

Myofascial release is a soft tissue therapy used to treat deep muscular tension, somatic dysfunction, and pain by relaxing the fascia (the fibrous bands around muscles, ligaments, and tendons). The technique requires very firm pressure that stretches and elongates deep muscle tissue, increasing range of motion and circulation.

What should I expect from a myofascial release massage session?

For myofascial release, you will usually remain fully clothed and lie on a massage table. You can expect very firm pressure, and therapists may work to the point of pain – sometimes using elbows or fists for extra deep work. Techniques vary, but usually include placing firm pressure on specific points and slowly pushing through deeper layers of muscle to stretch and elongate the fascia.

What are the benefits of myofascial release massage?

Myofascial therapy can relieve pain caused by muscular tension, relax tense muscles, and assists natural healing by increasing circulation. Regular myofascial massage is also thought to help break up scar tissue and heal sports injuries, and helps reduce chronic pain (such as low-back pain caused by sitting). The release of myofascial restrictions can help improve your body’s natural alignment and posture, which can be the root-cause of tension and pain.
