What is Reiki?

Reiki is an alternative method of bodywork meant to balance energy and promote healing. The word Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words – Rei (a keen intelligence guiding the functioning of the universe) and Ki (life force energy that flows through all living things).

Reiki practitioners work along meridian lines and chakras (pathways and centers of energy, respectively) with light touch, or even no touch. The goal is not to massage muscles, but to transfer energy and open blocked energy pathways.

What should I expect from a Reiki session?

For Reiki, you will lay fully clothed on a massage table while your therapist holds their hands on or above certain energy points on the body. Reiki is often used together with other natural therapies (homeopathy, aromatherapy, etc.) for a more tailored healing approach and greater relaxation.

Your therapist will hold their hands in position for a few minutes before moving on to other points on the body. You will likely feel warmth on each area as they work on them, and many people report tingling sensations. Overall, the experience should be very peaceful and relaxing.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki is meant to be deeply relaxing. Sessions should release tension and stress while increasing energy and blood flow to aid in self-healing. Reiki practitioners also believe it helps with sleep quality and rhythms, and that it can help with chronic problems such as eczema, headaches and asthma – but your results may vary, of course. Reiki will, at the very least, be a calming, relaxing experience that uses only very gentle techniques.
